Gun Violence & Bail Provisions
To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:
Whereas gun violence in our cities is on the rise;
Whereas 80% of guns being used in crime are obtained using illegal means including being smuggled from across the border;
Whereas the federal government has the sole responsibility to regulate the crossing of goods at the Canadian/American border;
Whereas our frontline constables are putting their life on the line to protect us by removing these violent criminals from the streets;
Whereas the federal justice system is failing victims of gun crime by allowing these criminals back on the streets;
Whereas the federal government as the sole jurisdiction to set penalties, including bail for firearm related offences.
We the undersigned petition the Legislative Assembly of to: Urge the Government of Canada to crack down on violent gun crimes, gun traffickers, and those who use firearms for violence and intimidation, by immediately strengthening Criminal Code bail provisions for all charges related to trafficking of firearms and violent firearm offences, and to explore mandatory-minimum sentences for gun trafficking.
